Mondariz, one of the thermal capitals of Galicia

Since it opened its doors over two centuries ago, the Mondariz Spa Resort has gradually become a benchmark for spas not only within our country but also in Europe. Its ability to adapt to changing times, the quality of its waters and the great diversity of the services offered in the different areas that make up this thermal complex are three of his most outstanding qualities.

This thermal resort, which is one of the oldest in Galicia, was founded in 1873 by the doctor Enrique Peinador Varela, who had arrived in O Grove three years earlier, delegated by the Spanish government to help in the fight against a strong hemorrhagic smallpox epidemic that had spread in the area. Enrique, very interested in the field of medical hydrology, discovered at that time the water sources of Gándara and Troncoso –though the second had been discovered in 1862 by a priest, its benefits have not been declared of public utility–, the springs of sodium bicarbonated waters that bath the Mondariz Spa Resort.

From then on he Enrique devoted himself, along with his brother, to promote the construction of a facility in which anyone who wished to enjoy the beneficial properties of the waters of Mondariz, could do so with maximum comfort surrounded by a natural environment. Such was the fame he acquired the spa, which were many famous people such as Castelao or Queen Isabel of Portugal, who wanted to test his miraculous treatments. The heyday of the Spa Resort ended with the Civil War and did not resurface until 1994, when the existing facilities began to be projected.

The complex has six types of different spaces that make a small spa town. First of all, there is a 4 Star Hotel equipped with 194 elegant rooms equipped with the latest technology, private garage, gym, sauna and two outdoor pools. There is also a central spa which has mineral waters, especially recommended for those who want calm some sort of ailment. Apart from this thermal space there is another called Palacio del Agua, a 3000 m2 spa center equipped with water beds, jets and geysers. For sports lovers, the Balneario has its own Golf Course of 18 holes, and for those wishing to enjoy different culinary styles, the thermal complex includes three restaurants: Pizzeria Os Pazos, the cuisine of the Clubhouse of the Golf Course, and Gandara Restaurant. It is also possible to hold various types of events in its Congress and Convention Center, consisting of 8 meeting rooms equipped with all the necessary audiovisual material needed and adapted to the volume of attendees.

The area where the spa is located is surrounded by nature and allows its guests to carry out all kinds of activities to suit all tastes. For children, the resort has a kids area enabled the practice of group games, crafts and film screenings. Lovers of water sports can enjoy swimming aerobics in the same hotel, or fishing and rafting in its outdoors. Those who prefer air routes will have the opportunity to spot the Rías Baixas from a light or microlight aircraft and guests who prefer adventures on land may make horseback riding, hiking or cycling in permanent contact with nature.
